ASME Santa Clara Valley Presents: Biorobotics
Biorobotics is an emerging and truly interdisciplinary scientific-technological field. Rooted primarily in research on Robotics, Natural Science, and Biomedical Engineering, Biorobotics is now spreading its application to many areas of engineering, from fundamental and applied science to humanities. The main focus of Biorobotics includes:
(1) Understand how biological systems work and interact with the environment and with human beings. Such study can be implemented through modeling living creatures as well as by building biomimetic robots, which provides novel insight into the biological systems and best understanding the scientific and engineering principles underlying the extraordinary performance.
(2) Develop innovative theory and technology for designing and building high performance robots. These robots, which may or may not be bio-inspired, will incorporate scientific knowledge on biological systems in order to be more effective and acceptable than traditional robots.
This seminar will introduce the scientific framework of Biorobotics and discuss the current Biorobotics research and potential market.
Winncy Du received her B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Jilin University, dual M.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering from West Virginia University and Georgia Institute of Technology respectively, and her PhD degree from Georgia Institute of Technology. She started her academic career as an assistant professor in the department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering at San José State University in 2000. She teaches Robotics, Mechatronics, Automation and Control, Dynamics, and Sensor Technology. She has been appointed as the director of Robotics Laboratory at San José State University since 2003. She has numerous publications in Robotics and related fields.
